What is a “Rocketpunk?”

What is a “Rocketpunk?” That was the inaugural question posed in the Rocketpunk SPACE PATROL group over five and a half years ago. It all began when we decided to chart our own course, breaking away from a traditional Trek fan club as USS Kaohsiung, determined to forge a community that embraced openness and inclusivity, free from the constraints of conventional fandom dictates. Essentially, our group was akin to a Star Trek community with the serial numbers filed off.

Initially, I defined “rocketpunk” in classic science fiction terms:

Rocketpunk (n): a genre of science fiction rooted in retro-futuristic visions of the future, particularly those prevalent in the 1950s through the 1980s.

While this definition still holds some truth, its meaning has evolved to encapsulate a broader philosophy that governs how we engage with fandom:

Rocketpunk (n): a philosophical approach to fandom distinguished by its commitment to acknowledging and validating all facets of the hobby as equally legitimate, while consciously rejecting gatekeeping, thereby fostering an inclusive and supportive community.

Over the years, our journey has been marked by efforts to connect with other groups, though not always with seamless success. Yet, we persist, steadfast in upholding the values that define us. In 2020, we marked seven years together—this December, we will celebrate a decade—spanning our journey from 8th FLEET – MOBILE to IKV ADJUDICATOR, from USS KAOHSIUNG to USS KAGA, and beyond.

From our humble beginnings as a group of six who launched a Star Trek Online fleet on December 2, 2013, we have grown into a close-knit community of nearly sixty members. Our growth has mirrored our commitment to inclusivity and supportiveness, traits that have been central to our identity as Rocketpunks.

As Rocketpunks, we embody a multifaceted approach to fandom. We are fans, passionately embracing the universes and narratives that inspire us. We are creators, crafting stories, art, and experiences that enrich our shared fandom. We are players, engaging with games and simulations that allow us to immerse ourselves in our favorite fictional worlds. And above all, we are friends, bound by a shared passion for exploration, discovery, and the imaginative landscapes of science fiction.

The term “Rocketpunk” has come to symbolize more than just a genre or a style of science fiction. It represents a mindset—a commitment to openness and inclusivity within fandom. It’s about creating a space where all fans feel welcomed and valued, regardless of their background, interests, or level of expertise. In a world where gatekeeping and exclusionary practices can sometimes overshadow the joy of fandom, Rocketpunk stands as a beacon of acceptance and camaraderie.

Our community has faced challenges along the way, navigating differences in opinion, navigating the complexities of online interactions, and navigating the evolving landscape of fandom itself. Yet, through it all, we have remained true to our core principles: respect, inclusivity, and a shared love for the imaginative worlds that fuel our collective imagination.

In our interactions with other groups and communities, we have sought to build bridges rather than walls. We recognize that diversity of thought and perspective enriches our collective experience of fandom. Whether collaborating on joint projects, participating in conventions and events, or simply sharing our enthusiasm for all things science fiction, we strive to foster meaningful connections and mutual respect.

Looking ahead, we envision a future where Rocketpunk continues to evolve and grow, welcoming new members and embracing new ideas. We aim to expand our reach, engaging with a wider audience of fans who share our passion for exploration, discovery, and the limitless possibilities of science fiction. Through ongoing dialogue and collaboration, we hope to contribute positively to the broader fandom community, promoting inclusivity and celebrating the diversity of voices that make our community vibrant and dynamic.

As we reflect on our journey from USS Kaohsiung to Rocketpunk SPACE PATROL, we are grateful for the friendships we have formed, the stories we have shared, and the adventures that lie ahead. Together, we will continue to explore the frontiers of imagination, guided by the spirit of Rocketpunk and the values that define us as a community.

Rocketpunk is not just a label—it’s a testament to the power of fandom to unite and inspire. It’s about celebrating what makes us unique while embracing our shared love for science fiction and the boundless possibilities it offers. As we embark on the next chapter of our journey, we invite fellow fans to join us in embracing the Rocketpunk philosophy and shaping the future of fandom together.
